Who is Lulu Guinness?
With no formal design training, Lulu Guinness started the brand with a fashion briefcase for women in 1989. The 29-year-old creative director Lulu Guinness designed a lady-like attaché case containing convenient pockets for everything. Driven by her own creative style, she began creating hand-held treasures that would start a ripple effect in the fashion industry.
Her ideas eventually morphed into an idea for a vintage-style red rose basket in black velvet, reflecting Lulu’s instinct for breaking edgy fashion boundaries. With critical acclimation from leaders in the fashion industry, praise paved the way for her success.
Opening her first shop in 1996, more shops followed in London, New York and Tokyo. Lulu Guinness is also famous for selling handbags in some of the world’s most prestigious department stores like Harrods and Selfridges.
Lulu Guinness still has an active role in the brand, just as she did at the start. She designs the interior of every new store with her signature panache, where she can express the true essence of the brand, and customers can transport themselves into the weird and wonderful world of Lulu Guinness.
Lulu received an OBE for services to the Fashion Industry in the 2006 Queen’s Birthday Honours. And in 2009, she received The Independent Handbag Designer Awards ICONOCLAST Award for “Lifetime Achievement in Handbag Design”.
Today, you can spot Lulu Guinness bags on the arms of A-list celebrities and her cult following, including Katy Perry, Sophie Dahl, Kiera Knightly, Sienna Miller, Bella Hadid, Kate Moss, Gillian Anderson, Clara Amfo and Blanca Miro.

Never seen without her trademark red lipstick, Lulu Guinness is the personification of her brand, with the central motif, the distinctive Dali-esque lips featuring on all handbags. The Lips clutch bag remains a staple in the accessory collection, incorporating the Surrealist art movement into mainstream popular culture.
Unsurprisingly some of her most famous creations now display proudly in a permanent exhibition in the V&A museum, the “The Cutting Edge: 50 Years of British Fashion 1947-1997”, including the Dali-esque Lips Clutch, the infamous Florist Basket and The Birdcage that tweets.
